A tragic incident unfolded in Ramu Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, when a village leader lost his life to an attack by wild elephants. The incident occurred early morning on Saturday (December 14) at Chikonchhari, along the Panjakhana-Sonaichhari road in Rajarkul Union. Ramu Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC), Iman Kanti Chowdhury, confirmed the event.

Victim Identified and Community in Fear


The victim, Abdul Haque (47), was a resident of Dhalarmukh in Rajarkul Union and the president of the Dhalarmukh Noyapara Community Committee. According to local accounts, Abdul Haque left his house early for business purposes. On his way to collect paddy from Sonaichhari, he encountered a herd of wild elephants in the Chikonchhari area. Tragically, he was trampled to death on the spot during the attack.

Rajarkul Union Parishad Chairman, Mofizur Rahman, expressed concern about the increasing intrusion of wild elephants in the area over the past few days. He said,
"The presence of wild elephants has heightened fear among locals. These attacks not only threaten lives but also damage homes and properties."

Police Action and Precautionary Measures


OC Iman Kanti Chowdhury stated that upon receiving the report, police promptly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and prepared a preliminary report. The body was handed over to the family after completing legal formalities.

This unfortunate incident highlights the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the region, underscoring the need for effective measures to ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife.
